Over the next several years, entry-level insurance positions in California will go unfilled due to a lack of trained workers. These high-paying job openings are initial steps in high wage/high growth career paths that are part of California’s $106 billion insurance industry.

The California Insurance Careers Program (CA-ICP) has been designed in response to industry demand for qualified entry level workers. This statewide program is able to focus on specific employer demand region by region to ensure a balance between workforce supply and industry need.

Basic requirements such as industry knowledge and computer and communication skills are the foundation of the initiative, which prepares community college students for careers in the insurance industry by complementing a Business Associate of Arts (AA) degree. Insurance classes include:

INS 1: Introduction to Insurance
INS 2: Code and Ethics
INS 3: Insurance Internship (paid)
INS 21: Property/Liability Insurance Principles
INS 22: Personal Insurance
INS 23: Commercial Insurance

Note: Course prefixes/designation may vary by college
In a survey of over 2,500 employers, 98% indicated that this training would provide a significant hiring advantage for program participants.

Funded in part by a grant awarded under the President’s Community-Based Job Training Grants, as implemented by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment & Training Administration, the California Insurance Careers Program unites businesses, community colleges, workforce investment boards, and the K-12 system to create a self sustaining model that will serve the insurance industry in California indefinitely.
